Behavior Design Boot Camp

This page is for Alumni of my Boot Camp.

If you stumbled upon it by accident and you're not Alumni, then go back and learn more about my Boot Camp here.

My team and I are working to add value to your Boot Camp experience to help you put your Boot Camp skills into action back at work.

Swarm of Behaviors Worksheet (printable)

The first is the Swarm of Behaviors ("Swarm of B's") Model in a printable worksheet for you to use with your team.

The point of this model is to clarify the difference between aspirations and outcomes (objectives where most projects start), and to help get your team thinking in terms of behaviors.

You can teachback and whiteboard this concept if your team is stuck talking in abstractions (e.g. “engage our users” or “improve metrics by 10%”).

Then, hand out the worksheet to your team to collect their ideas.

To help generate behaviors for the “swarm,” you can use the Magic Wanding Method, or just put your team to work quietly until they fill in each box.

Help them get started by clarifying the aspiration/outcome and start generating Behaviors that will take you there by saying something like this:

If you could wave a magic wand and get anyone to do any behavior that would lead to [aspiration/outcome], what would you wish for? Who would do what?

Then, once they have filled each box, hear a few aloud. Explain to them the three characteristics of a good match, what I call a “Golden Behavior:”

  1. Something you can do.

  2. Something you want to do.

  3. Something that effectively leads you to the aspiration/outcome.

Maybe you wrap up the session by explaining that matching each person/a is as important to your team’s objective as getting the technical pieces on target.

Even this straightforward model can help your team think more clearly about behavior and develop a common language using models and methods in Behavior Design.
